In a recent blog, Dr. Brad Tice discusses why Medication Management Therapy (MTM) isn’t being adopted at a quicker rate.
Medication Management Therapy focuses on the pharmacist delivering more than just counseling to a patient – it can also focus on a patient’s vitals over a period time or keeping up with a diabetic patient’s blood sugars levels in addition to monitoring medication.
While this seems like a worthwhile investment, there are a few barriers:
- Timing Issues
- Cost Allocation
- Financial incentives
According to Dr. Tice, the savings from utilizing MTM appear outside the pharmacy in fewer hospital readmissions, ED visits and physician utilization.
Tice notes, “Failing to measure the full impact of MTM programs is difficult to do, yet doing so is a fatal analytical error.”
