California accountable care network receives license, builds management team

Canopy Health, a Bay Area-wide healthcare network being developed by San Francisco-based UCSF Health, Walnut Creek, Calif.-based John Muir Health and three physician groups, has received its California license to operate in seven Bay Area counties.

With the restricted license, the network may offer services in Marin, Southern Sonoma, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa and portions of San Mateo and Solano counties in California, according to Canopy Health.

Canopy Health, which currently includes more than 4,000 physicians and 12 hospitals throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, said it will contract directly with health plans on behalf of all providers who are part of the network to develop a competitively priced insurance product.

In addition to the license, Canopy Health also announced it has built out its management team, naming Meg Durbin, MD, as CMO and Patrick Caster as CFO.

Dr. Durbin, an internal medicine physician and pediatrician, was most recently vice president for care coordination for Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health's Peninsula Coastal Region.

She also served as chairwoman of Sutter Health's Maintenance Committee. In that role, she led systemwide efforts to assess and update preventive care guidelines across Sutter Health's physician network and improve mental health and primary care integration, Canopy Health said.

Additionally, Dr. Durbin was a member of a working group to implement shared-savings accountable care arrangements between Sutter Health and Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and several employer groups.

Mr. Caster most recently was COO and CFO of PIH Health, a nonprofit, regional healthcare network in Whittier, Calif.

He was also the lead representative from PIH Health for the founding of the Vivity joint venture, which launched in 2015. That joint venture includes UCLA Health, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital, all based in Los Angeles. Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Fountain Valley-based MemorialCare Health System, PIH Health, Torrance (Calif.) Memorial Health and Anthem Blue Cross are also part of Vivity.
