Broward Health's Name Change Sparks Opposition

Plans to change the name of Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and three other hospitals in the Broward Health system have stirred opposition from physicians, according to a Miami Herald report.

Under the plan, "medical center" will be dropped from each hospital name as part of a summer rebranding campaign. Broward General will become Broward Health Medical Center, Coral Springs (Fla.) Medical Center will become Broward Health Coral Springs, Imperial Point Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale will become Broward Health Imperial Point and North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, Fla., will transition to Broward Health North.

The plans passed last month with a 4-3 vote by the system's governing board, but many physicians in the system remain opposed to the rebranding, according to the report.

The chief of staff at Coral Springs Medical Center said the name change will create confusion, according to the report. "Members of the community, particularly if they are new to the area, will not understand what 'Broward Health Coral Springs' means. It could be a clinic, a medical office building, a laboratory, a diagnostic facility," Carrie E. Greenspan, MD, said in the report.
