Question: What is one idea you think we would use more in healthcare?

MD: I believe we should learn to separate signals from noise.

Q: As a CMO and CMIO, what are the biggest challenges and biggest benefits of combining medicine and IT?

MD: The greatest challenges are perfecting interoperability among health systems, coping with too much noise programmed into the system and finding correlation without evidence of causation.

The biggest benefits are assessing the impact of clinical and nonclinical variables, indexing and overseeing analytics and outcomes management.

Q: One panel you're speaking on at the April conference is titled "Innovation and Information Technology." What do you consider two of the main innovations in health IT over the past five years?

MD: Two of the key innovations include health informatics and remote patient monitoring.
