Question: Describe one of your best colleagues. What does that person do to make them indispensable to your organization?
Patti Hart: One of my best colleagues is an administrator at MUSC. She oversees the ambulatory practice site operations. She is a tremendous partner; I look to her for consultation on many avenues as she has also been with the organization for several years. She is collaborative, honest, proactive and quality-driven. She has been a wonderful partner in enhancing nursing practice in the ambulatory setting. She is supportive and encouraging. Every executive needs a partner like her.
Q: How do you define patient engagement?
PH: It is partnering with the patient to embrace their care. We collaborate with patients to ensure they understand their plan, establish their goals and assure they are part of the care we provide. We need to ensure they understand why we are proposing the treatment and that we want the same outcomes.
Q: As a leader, what is the best investment you made in your own professional development in the past five years?
PH: In the last five years I investigated many different doctoral programs, both PhD and DNP. Once I determined a track, I invested in myself and completed my DNP. I thoroughly enjoyed my education and my challenges along the way. It then positioned me nicely to take the step from director to associate chief nursing officer.
