Question: Who or what are the disruptors that have your attention? Why?

Mudit Garg: Healthcare is in a tough place; we ask our people to do more with less and transform while also managing wafer-thin margins. I admire healthcare executives who have the strength and courage to challenge the status quo and also lead their people to embrace the change. I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of these phenomenal people in my role at Qventus. James Hereford, President and CEO of Fairview Health Services is one of these leaders. He’s often told me that when it comes to inefficiency in healthcare, the biggest waste is the waste of human potential and that we need a new way of delivering care to achieve that potential.

Q: What did you notice about your healthcare experience the last time you were at the receiving end as a patient?

MG: I have a 2 year old, so that means a lot of trips to the doctor and the urgent care. Every time I am left wanting a healthcare system that just works better. Meaning, it just works for me as a patient and just works for those who deliver care. When I go to the doctor, the clinical advice is great and the staff work their hardest to make my experience a good one, but it all seems to require superhuman effort. As a patient, the process of making an appointment, waiting in the lobby when you are there and navigating the system, is often a struggle and it takes away from everything that the clinicians and staff are doing to deliver great care.

Q: As a leader, what is the best investment you made in your own professional development in the past five years?

MG: Starting Qventus. It makes me realize every day how much more I have to learn. The second would be having an executive coach. I think every leader should invest in one. It forces self-awareness and is often a prompt to reflect and act on the very important things that you never have time for.
