Question: What one strategic initiative will demand the most of your time and energy in 2019?
Divya Joshi: Solving the tug-of-war between focusing on the care provided at a location and the patient’s care trajectory regardless of location. As health systems get larger and patient conditions more complex (often requiring travel), the balance between a geographically structured organization (sites of care) and clinical patient trajectory-focused one (crossing the sites) is difficult to find. Traditional healthcare now also needs to encompass social determinants of health, all in an overall strategy that does not align with compensation models. And we don’t have the luxury of time.
Q: Healthcare takes a lot of heat for not innovating quickly. What's your take on this?
DJ: Physicians are trained to be thoughtful, independent-minded and self-reliant. What innovators could do is provide hospitals/health systems with a business model and a deployment strategy. What we could do is create a system for fast-tracking innovative methods or tools to make it to implementation quickly, instead of a one by one consideration.
Q: Can you share some praise with us about people you work with? What does greatness look like to you when it comes to your team?
DJ: It always gladdens me and makes me proud when my team puts the vision before the barrier, the greater good before self, and resilience and positivity before complacency and complaint. Taking the high road is often the more difficult path.
