Question: What do innovators/entrepreneurs from outside healthcare need to better understand about hospital and health system leaders?

Andrew Resnick: There are so many individual solutions proposed by innovators but from a hospital and health system perspective, it is very inefficient to find dozens of best in breed solutions. Keeping up with the integration demands many scarce resources. If innovators keep this in mind and can help develop plug and play solutions, that is extremely valuable.

Q: Healthcare takes a lot of heat for not innovating quickly. What’s your take?

AR: Innovation is easy. Change management is much more difficult. Our systems are very complex and I think the environment is ripe to quickly adopt innovations that truly improve care and make workflows more efficient.

Q: Can you share some praise with us about people you work with? What does greatness look like to you when it comes to your team?

AR: Understanding everyone’s strengths and weaknesses is critical in managing a team. Some want more direction, others want more independence. Some can thrive in any environment, others in specific one. Greatness in a team is when the group all understands the set of strengths and weaknesses of all members and enables everyone to be at their best.
