Ascension Health Michigan remakes governance structure: 4 things to know

Ascension Health Michigan in Novi, the Michigan footprint of St. Louis-based Ascension, has combined its previously separate boards of trustees to create a statewide governance structure.

Here are four things to know about Ascension Health Michigan's remade governance structure.

1. A new statewide board has been formed, called the Ascension Michigan Market Board of Trustees, which brings together individuals representing the communities served by Ascension's health ministries across Michigan. Ascension Health Michigan includes Borgess Health in Kalamazoo, Genesys Health System in Grand Blanc, St. John Providence in Metro Detroit, St. Joseph Health System in Tawas, and St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw and Standish.

2. The new governance structure also calls for the appointment of a hospital board for each of the regional health ministries — St. John Providence, Borgess Health, Genesys Health System, St. Mary's of Michigan and St. Joseph Health System — "to provide continuity with the communities where these health systems have deep historical roots," according to Ascension Health Michigan. Individual hospital boards and health system boards have been dissolved and replaced with the Western Michigan Hospital Board, the Southeast Michigan Hospital Board and the Mid-Michigan Hospital Board.

3. In a prepared statement, Gwen MacKenzie, Ascension Health Michigan's market executive and senior vice president, expressed optimism in regard to the new governance structure. "The [Ascension Michigan] Market Board [of Trustees] will provide direction and vision across the entire state, ensuring consistent focus on creating integrated networks of care as part of our national health ministry," she said. "This configuration makes it far easier to leverage the benefits of being a national system with common goals, practices and standards."

4. A complete list of members of the statewide board and the new regional sub-boards is available here.
