Amazon to add data scientist to its health plan team: 6 things to know

Amazon is fielding applications for a data scientist to work on its health insurance plan, according to a job listing on its website.

Here are six things to know:

1. The new employee will be the first-ever data scientist to join the Amazon Benefits Department.

2. The employee will be responsible for establishing data science, business intelligence, analytics and reporting capabilities for the Amazon health plan.

3. The new hire will analyze data to help identify opportunities that improve employee well-being and healthcare outcomes, while reducing costs.

4. He or she will work with internal and external partners, including Amazon's healthcare venture with JPMorgan Chase and Berkshire Hathaway, to assist in developing and managing healthcare and population health management solutions.

5. Amazon is seeking applicants with a deep understanding of health plans and how they interact.

6. Interested applicants must demonstrate:

  • Previous experience with healthcare data sources such as claims, EHRs, event notification, clinical and patient-reported information
  • Knowledge of standard methods for measuring healthcare utilization, spending, quality, outcomes, risk adjustment, provider profiling and related analytical tasks
  • Medical and pharmacy plan knowledge
  • Understanding how plan designs interact and impact population health
