Advocate Aurora pledges to use 100% clean power by 2030

The 27-hospital Advocate Aurora Health system committed Jan. 2 to using 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030 as part of its pledge to create healthier communities.

Advocate Aurora Health, based in Downers Grove, Ill., and Milwaukee, spans 27 hospitals and more than 500 outpatient care sites. Using clean power across these sites of care will reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 392,657 metric tons — the equivalent of taking 84,000 cars off the road.

"Transitioning to clean energy reduces air pollution that is responsible for many chronic health conditions and mitigates the health impacts of climate change," Mary Larsen, Advocate Aurora's director of environmental affairs and sustainability, said in a press release. "Accelerating our work to make good on this pledge is just another way we will support the health and wellness of the patients and communities we are privileged to serve."

The health system will evaluate all major construction and renovation projects for on-site renewable electricity sources, but plans to use a combination of on-site, off-site and purchased renewable power. It will also focus on becoming more energy efficient.
