Adirondack Health in New York Lays Off 17

Adirondack Health in Saranac Lake, N.Y., has laid off 17 employees in an attempt to narrow a $3 million budget gap, according to a North Country Public Radio report.

System officials have attributed the workforce reduction to a decline in inpatient volume and reduced reimbursement. Adirondack Health President and CEO Chandler Ralph said employees from "across the board" were affected by the layoffs, including nursing, food service and management, according to the report.

In addition to the layoffs, the hospital will not fill another eight vacant positions. It also froze management salaries for 2013, outsourced transcription services and asked employee unions to reopen contracts.
