8 things to know about CEO Mark Herzog and his 17-year career with Holy Family Memorial

Mark Herzog retired as CEO of Manitowoc, Wis.-based Holy Family Memorial, a part of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Sponsored Ministries, March 30. The former chief executive leaves behind a notable career spanning more than three decades and various facets of nonprofit healthcare, including rural hospitals, urban hospitals, holding companies and faith-based entities.

Here are eight things to know about Mr. Herzog and his career.

1. Mr. Herzog began working at Holy Family on Sept. 17, 2001.

2. He said he decided to retire to open the door for new leaders "who possess the skills needed for today's healthcare environment," according to a hospital news release.

3. During Mr. Herzog's tenure, Holy Family launched a five-year Vision 2022 initiative with Silver Lake College and Leede Research Group "to move Manitowoc County forward through energized planning, action and achievement, resulting in growth, community health and prosperity."

4. Other organizational achievements during his tenure include: American Heart Association Gold Plus Heart Attack Receiving Center designation; Becker's Hospital Review's Top 100 Community Hospitals and Top 150 Places to Work; CMS Five Star Grade for quality and excellence in 2017; and multiple inclusions on Hospitals & Health Networks' "Health Care's Most Wired" list.

5. Prior to joining Holy Family, Mr. Herzog served as executive vice president and COO of Saint Anthony Memorial Health Centers in Michigan City, Ind. He also previously served as executive vice president and COO of La Porte (Ind.) Hospital, as well as vice president of operations and vice president of professional services for Cleveland-based Meridia Hillcrest Hospital. He began his healthcare career at Pittsburgh-based Forbes Health System.

6. Looking back on his career, Mr. Herzog told Becker's Hospital Review he's proud he's come to understand what initiatives work well in systems and communities and what initiatives don't. He said it was also gratifying for him to see Holy Family use culture shaping as a strategic tool, which has helped staff members reach their potential. Additionally, he mentored nearly 30 individuals over the years and enjoyed seeing them move into positions at prominent organizations such as Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System, Cleveland Clinic and St. Louis-based SSM Health.

7. Outside of health systems, Mr. Herzog said he's enjoyed being able to teach colleagues through the American College of Healthcare Executives, share lessons learned during his career, and teach at several of the top-ranked U.S. health management graduate programs.

8. He plans to continue teaching with ACHE. He will also still serve in an advisory role with the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Sponsored Ministries until May 4.
