7 things to know about Dr. Richard Stone, the VA's new top health official

Richard Stone, MD, a practicing dermatologist, was named acting executive-in-charge of the Veterans Health Administration on July 16.

Here are seven things to know about Dr. Stone:

1. He will serve as acting principal deputy undersecretary for health/executive-in-charge of the VHA, succeeding Carolyn Clancy, MD, who will move into another VHA role.

2. In his new role, Dr. Stone will be responsible for leading clinical policies and programs for the VHA, a system comprising 166 hospitals and 1,200 outpatient clinics in the U.S. and its territories.

3. He is returning to the Department of Veterans Affairs after serving as principal deputy undersecretary of health in the VHA from February 2016 to March 2017.

4. Outside of the VA, he was vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he focused on military health. Dr. Stone also was a principal at Booz Allen Hamilton.

5. Dr. Stone is a retired U.S. Army physician. He was the Army's deputy surgeon general and the deputy commanding general of support for U.S. Army MEDCOM. During that time, he led the operations cell of the defense health agency transition team, according to the VA.

6. Dr. Stone earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry, as well as his medical degree, from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He has a master's degree in strategic studies from Carlisle, Pa.-based Army War College.

7. His awards and honors include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Combat Action Badge.
