7 things for healthcare leaders to watch in Congress

As Congress returns from a two-week recess, a number of legislative items remain unresolved, including healthcare reform and a government spending bill.

Here are seven things to know as Congress reconvenes.

1. President Donald Trump and Republican leaders have long vowed to repeal and replace the ACA. However, the GOP's first proposal, dubbed the American Health Care Act, was pulled from the House floor last month due to lack of support.

2. Still, Republicans continue to make efforts for healthcare reform. During a Saturday conference call, House GOP leaders said a revised healthcare bill is closer to completion, according to Politico, which cites "members who participated on the call."

3. The conference call came as President Trump nears his 100-days milestone in the Oval Office. However, the president on Friday did not emphasize that milestone date of April 29 as a target for voting on a revised ACA replacement bill, according to The New York Times. According to the article, he told reporters, "We'll see what happens — no particular rush."

4. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., expressed similar sentiments, saying House members won't vote on a revised healthcare bill until the needed support is there, according to Politico.

5. At present, moderate Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., is pressing for a proposal to permit states to waive some parts of the ACA, reports NYT.

6. In the meantime, U.S. lawmakers are looking to pass a government spending bill this week, reports Politico. A new spending bill is needed to avoid a government shutdown. Government funding runs out April 28.

7. In that next spending bill, Democrats said they plan to push hard for cost-sharing reduction funding, which assists low-income Americans in paying for their ACA insurance coverage.
