The following layoffs or workforce reductions were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in the last three weeks. They are listed below by the number of employees or positions affected.
1. Detroit Medical Center finalized plans to lay off 565 employees by December at seven of its locations as it outsources its housekeeping services to Sodexo. According to a statement from Conrad Mallett, DMC's chief administrative officer, "Sodexo willingly agreed to offer employment to all existing staff members who successfully complete the on-boarding process."
2. Columbus (Ga.) Regional Health plans to eliminate 219 positions, which will lead to 99 layoffs — including three members of its executive leadership.
3. Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio, laid off 140 employees, reduced the hours of 30 others and will leave another 30 positions vacant.
4. Due to financial issues, Southcoast Health in New Bedford, Mass., planned to lay off 70 workers.
5. Louisburg, N.C.-based Franklin Medical Center, part of Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, cut its inpatient acute-care beds from 70 to two and laid off 59 employees, 29 percent of the hospital's workforce.
