At the Becker's Hospital Review Annual Meeting in Chicago May 10, Arturo Polizzi, chief human resource officer of Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica, discussed how to transform a healthcare organization's culture.
He said the following factors drive cultural change:
• Leadership. Leaders need to be transparent and set expectations.
• Vision. ProMedica had groups of employees design culture maps to illustrate the current state of the organization and the desired state.
• Right systems. ProMedica is looking at Lean as a system for performance improvement.
• A culture focus and plan.
Mr. Polizzi said one of the keys to transforming an organization's culture is actually taking action rather than getting stuck in the discussion phase. "Don't [just] talk about it; do something about it," he said.
