4 biggest challenges of retirement

Retirement can bring challenges about money, worries about health and more intrinsic identity crises, according to a June 15 CNBC article.

While many look forward to the days when they can stop working, some people find themselves feeling lost and out of place without their career to tie them down. According to George Jerjian, the author of the piece, there are many challenges to retirement.

Here are the most commonly cited complaints:

  1. Regret for the decision to keep working plagues a lot of people, who wish they would've waited until later to stop.

  2. Worries about health also create issues in retirement. Without work to keep people active and stimulated, many worry their health will deteriorate and their retirement will be unpleasant or cut short.

  3. Some have identity struggles when their work, which was an integral part of their lives, is taken away.

  4. The biggest challenge, according to Mr. Jerjian, is finding purpose. A career is often the purpose of many, so when it is gone, retirees have to work extra hard to find something that motivates them and that they care for.
