3 potential legislative steps to watch now that the House approved the AHCA

Following Thursday's House passage of the GOP's American Health Care Act, a number of steps remain in the legislative process, reports The Washington Post.

Here are three potential legislative steps to watch, as stated in the report.

Step 1. Now, the bill moves to the Senate. The GOP seeks to pass the legislation through the budget reconciliation process, which would require 51 "yes" votes, the report notes. Through this process, the legislation must relate to spending or taxes, meaning non-budgetary ACA provisions could not be considered, according to the report. Ultimately, the Senate parliamentarian will decide whether the budget reconciliation process may be used with this legislation, according to the report. A specific timeline for Senate action on healthcare has not been disclosed.

Step 2. Republican senators indicated they intend to focus on rewriting their own healthcare legislation, according to a separate report from The Washington Post. Any revised Senate healthcare legislation will likely vary from the House's more conservative version, which would spur the formation of a conference committee to develop a final bill for both chambers to vote on, reports The Washington Post. In the end, if both chambers passed the final legislation, President Donald Trump could veto the bill or sign it into law.

Step 3. Other possible steps Republicans could take to overaul healthcare include administrative actions, reports The Washington Post. In January, President Trump signed an executive order with the goal of lessening the economic burden of the ACA. According to The Washington Post, one possible regulatory cutting down the list of benefits insurers must cover under the ACA.
