2 Mass General Brigham researchers earn national honors

Two researchers from Somerville, Mass.-based Mass General Brigham hospitals have received national honors.

Emery Brown, MD, PhD, a physician investigator in the department of anesthesia, critical care and pain management at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, received the National Medal of Science, according to a Jan. 6 health system news release.

Dr. Brown has developed innovative methods to accelerate recovery of consciousness after general anesthesia and implemented a closed-loop anesthesia delivery system to control anesthetic state, the release said.

David Walt, PhD, an investigator in the department of pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Dr. Walt pioneered the use of microwell arrays in generic measurements and single-molecule detection, which has contributed to a nearly millionfold reduction in the cost of DNA sequencing and genotyping over the last decade, according to the release.

President Joe Biden announced the recipients of the awards — the nation's highest honors for leadership and achievement in science and technology — on Jan. 3, according to a White House news release.
