Wayne, Pa.-based services provider Crothall Healthcare said it did not renew its contract with Chippenham and Johnston-Willis hospitals in Richmond, Va., which will result in 139 layoffs, according to a Richmond Times-Dispatch report.
Affected Crothall employees primarily include housekeeping workers at the hospitals.
They also include operations managers and lead janitors, among others.
Crothall filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice Nov. 15 with the Virginia Employment Commission, notifying the state of the layoffs.
A letter signed by a human resources consultant with Crothall states the company expects the layoffs to be permanent and begin on Jan. 20 "absent other contractual developments," according to the report.
"We have notified the affected employees of the change through WARN notices, where applicable. Employees are eligible to apply for other positions within Crothall Healthcare, as well as with other sectors of the company and with the new EVS [environmental services] company for those hospitals," a Crothall spokesperson told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
A spokesperson for HCA Virginia, which operates Chippenham and Johnston-Willis hospitals, told the publication she expects Austin, Texas-based HHS, the new company contracted for housekeeping services, to rehire workers affected by the layoffs.
