Texas Children's Hospital Forms Medical-Legal Partnership With Houston Lawyers

Texas Children's Hospital in Houston has formed a medical-legal partnership with the Houston Bar Association's Houston Volunteer Lawyers to aid low-income patients and their families, according to a Sacramento Bee report.

Under the partnership, a dedicated staff attorney from Houston Volunteer Lawyers will provide legal advice and representation to Texas Children's patients and their families with the help of pro bono lawyers, according to the report.

The goal of the partnership is to help patients and families solve health problems that are caused or exacerbated by issues that can be resolved with legal expertise. For example, a lawyer could help negotiate with a landlord to address a mold infestation if it triggered a child's asthma, according to the report. Patients and families may also need legal support to secure Medicaid payments and prepare legal guardianships.

Initially, the medical-legal partnership will provide services to patients in inpatient rehabilitation, fetal center, special needs primary care clinic, retrovirology and Texas Children's Pediatrics-Gulfgate.

The partnership is funded in part by a donation from Walmart.
