Study: Proficiency May be Attained After 30 Transfemoral Aortic Valve Implantations

Physicians may have to perform 30 transfemoral aortic valve implantations before becoming proficient, according to a study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Interventions.

Researchers performed a retrospective analysis of the first 44 consecutive patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation in a trial at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic from 2008-2011.

They found physicians gained proficiency, defined by decreased procedural times, radiation and contrast volumes, over 30 cases with a possible plateau afterwards.
