Southside Regional Approved for Open Heart Surgery Program

Petersburg, Va.-based Southside Regional Medical Center has received state approval to open an open-heart surgery program that would provide bypass surgery and heart valve repair services, according to a report from the Times Dispatch.

SRMC has been denied previous certificate of need requests concerning the heart surgery program because the state board believed an additional heart surgery program would dilute patient volumes at other clinics in the state. Its current application, while facing administrative obstacles, drew significant support in a public hearing held by the state health department, according to the report.

The hospital says that the $900,000 program will take more than a year to get started but will provide needed heart surgery options for rural areas near Petersburg, according to the Times Dispatch.
