Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md., has converted its six pediatric intensive care beds to general pediatric beds, according to a Gazette report.
The hospital's PICU had an average of fewer than two patients a day for the past 18 to 24 months, according to the report. Switching the PICU beds to general pediatric beds brought the bed count to 25, enabling the hospital to increase capacity for non-intensive pediatric patients.
Now, pediatric patients at Shady Grove who require intensive care will be transferred to hospitals in Washington, D.C., or Baltimore, which offer the service.
Shady Grove continues to offer a pediatric emergency department, pediatric surgery and a 32-bed neonatal intensive care unit, according to the report.
