Akron (Ohio) Children's Hospital announced plans for a $200 million expansion project to support growth in the hospital's patient volume and services.
The project, called "Building on the Promise," includes a new critical care tower that will feature a new neonatal intensive care unit, a new emergency department, outpatient surgical suites and space for pediatric subspecialty programs. The existing ED was built to accommodate 44,000 annual visits but currently sees more than 60,000 annual visits.
The hospital will also expand the Ronald McDonald House of Akron and build a new parking deck and patient and visitor welcome center.
Akron Children's Hospital will build the new tower using Integrated Lean Project Delivery, a Lean process to reduce waste and increase efficiency. As part of this method, the hospital will test blueprints for the tower in full-scale mockups built in a local warehouse.
Construction will begin in the spring of 2013 and will be completed in 2015, according to the release.
