Hospitals in Pennsylvania's Berks County are connecting with a national movement that aims to limit radiation exposure in children from CT scans, according to a Reading Eagle report.
According to the report, CT scans for children have increased almost 10 percent in the past decade, with 7 million total scans performed on children every year. Reading (Pa.) Hospital conducts 245 scans on children per month, the report said.
While CT scans have less radiation in 2011 than they did in 2000 and do improve patient outcomes, the report said Pennsylvania hospitals want to limit radiation "as low as reasonably achievable" by avoiding recent peaks in the number of CT scans.
