FDA Approves Simultaneous PET, MRI Scans

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared the Siemens Biograph mMR system, which is the first device able to conduct a PET scan and an MRI scan at the same time, according to an FDA news release.

Use of this system will now allow physicians to work on one machine, and it also offers a lower radiation dose and an increased soft tissue contrast compared with PET/CT scanners, the release said.

The release also states the PET/MRI system could give physicians more insight into a patient's condition due to the high-detail images of an MRI scan.
