New York's Department of Health voted 16-2 to approve New York City-based Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's proposal of a $142 million outpatient cancer center in Westchester County, according to a Crain's New York Business report.
Although local hospitals claimed there was overcapacity for cancer treatment in the area, the department said there were enough cancer patients for all hospitals, including Memorial Sloan-Kettering. The department's approval was based on projections of population growth and an increase in the incidence of cancer in Westchester, primarily due to an aging population.
