Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island in Pawtucket is partnering with Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston instead of nearby Miriam Hospital or Rhode Island Hospital, both in Providence, for cardiac care, according to a Providence Journal report.
Memorial Hospital hosts Brown University training programs at the hospital but has opted for the Harvard-affiliated BWH instead of Brown-affiliated hospitals to boost its cardiology service. BWH offers Memorial Hospital patients heart surgery, which is not offered at Memorial. Memorial patients can also undergo heart surgery at Miriam Hospital, whose heart surgery program is ending in the fall, or Rhode Island Hospital.
Memorial Hospital President Francis R. Dietz said the hospital did not partner with Rhode Island Hospital because "Rhode Island has chosen not to have us part of what they're doing." However, Rhode Island hospital CMO John B. Murphy, MD, said Memorial did not reach out to them, according to the report.
