Dignity Health Hospitals, Cancer Center in California Partner to Expand Oncology Services

Bakersfield (Calif.) Memorial Hospital, Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center in Bakersfield and Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield are partnering to develop a pediatric oncology program that will include a new inpatient unit at Mercy Hospital Downtown, also in Bakersfield, according to a Bakersfield Californian report.

The partnership will give patients access to the resources of three healthcare providers, including different medical technology at these separate facilities.

Bakersfield Memorial and Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield are party of San Francisco-based Dignity Health.

The new inpatient unit will house 10 private patient rooms and a family room area on the second floor of Mercy Hospital Downtown. According to the report, Mercy Hospitals' foundation, The Friends of Mercy Foundation, has raised nearly $1 million for the project, which will begin in the next 60 days.

The pediatric oncology program that will be developed through the partnership was made possible through the opening of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital's pediatric intensive care unit, according the report. Integrated breast cancer and prostate cancer treatment programs may also develop under the partnership, as the organizations are investing a total of $450,000 to $500,000 to bring new technology to Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center.
