San Antonio-based CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System is exploring an academic affiliation in pediatrics with Houston-based Baylor College of Medicine and its affiliate Texas Children's Hospital in Houston now that Christus Santa Rosa's longstanding partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is over, according to a statement by Christus Santa Rosa president Patrick Carrier that was published by KSAT.
Christus Santa Rosa's more than 40-year partnership with UTHSC-San Antonio ended when the university chose to partner with Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health Systems and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia instead of Christus to build a freestanding children's hospital in San Antonio.
Christus Santa Rosa is currently building a $135 million, 800,000-square-foot expansion and renovation of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children's Hospital in San Antonio, which also includes a name change to Children's Hospital of San Antonio.
Christus Santa Rosa's possible partnership with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital could include the following, according to the statement:
• A residency training program.
• Recruiting pediatric subspecialists.
• New and existing research initiatives.
• Expanding pediatric subspecialty programs and services in areas like bone marrow transplant and pediatric trauma.
• Adding a comprehensive high-risk obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine program.
• Developing outreach programs and referral networks.
Mr. Carrier said the health system could continue to partner with UTHSC-San Antonio for specific areas of adult medicine.
Kenneth L. Kalkwarf, DDS, MS, president ad interim of UTHSC-San Antonio, also expressed a desire to continue to work collaboratively with Christus in patient care, according to a UTHSC-San Antonio news release.
