The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanguard Health Systems are proposing a freestanding children's hospital in San Antonio that would be the base of a new pediatric network, according to a San Antonio Express-News report.
The health systems plan to submit the proposal to the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and San Antonio-based University Health System by the end of this month. UHS has been seeking a partner to build a children's hospital for several years, according to the report.
Under the proposal, which is still being finalized, CHOP and Vanguard would form a for-profit management company to oversee the new hospital and network. Vanguard would invest more than $300 million to build a 225- to 250-bed hospital, and CHOP would provide expertise in managing pediatric care. In addition, the organizations would form a non-profit entity for research and philanthropy.
CHOP and Vanguard's plan is one of three children's hospital projects being proposed to the University of Texas Health Science Center and UHS, according to the report. San Antonio-based Christus Santa Rosa Health System is changing its campus into a standalone children's hospital. San Antonio-based Methodist Healthcare System is still developing a proposal.
