The University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center and Rochester (N.Y.) General Hospital have partnered to offer a new aortic valve replacement procedure, according to a Democrat and Chronicle report.
The procedure, called transcatheter aortic valve replacement, is a less invasive procedure than other valve replacement techniques and allows frailer patients who might not otherwise be candidates for surgery to undergo the procedure.
Edwards Sapien, the manufacturer of the valve, selects hospitals that can perform the procedure, according to the report. One of the criteria for offering the procedure is having at least five candidates for the surgery. As neither URMC nor RGH had the requisite number individually, they collaborated to offer the TAVR program together.
