Pittsburgh-based West Penn Allegheny Health System is expected to announce plans for a new medical school by the end of the week, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.
The announcement is expected to be made at a reception Friday night, to which invitations mention "a special announcement that celebrates tomorrow's physicians." CEO Christopher Olivia has told a community collaborative that, for a year, the system has been in negotiations with the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia over the establishment of a four-year medical school in Pittsburgh. A system spokesperson confirmed Mr. Olivia will speak on plans for a new medical school Friday, but declined to elaborate on what the "definite plans" entail, according to the report.
The five-hospital system, which recently reported a $22 million loss for third quarter 2011, has been trying to expand to a full medical school for nearly 10 years, according to the report. It has teaching affiliations with Temple, Drexel University and other medical schools or colleges in the Philadelphia area.
