Scripps Health in San Diego is planning to unleash a $2 billion plan to rebuild its La Jolla, Calif., campus over the next 25 years to meet seismic regulations, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report.
Scripps La Jolla, one of five hospitals in the Scripps system, was not one of the 20 hospitals listed as structurally unsound in a report released last week, but it joins many other systems in the southern California region in the pursuit or consideration of similar construction goals.
According to California seismic laws, hospitals must be able to withstand a major earthquake by 2013, or the state will prohibit the hospital from providing acute care services. By 2030, hospitals must withstand an earthquake and continue to function.
Within the next two years, Scripps will announce 25-year plans for replacing buildings at each hospital campus, according to a Scripps official cited in the report.
