More than 200 hospital leaders from across the United States traveled to Capitol Hill yesterday, the American Hospital Association's Advocacy Day, to urge their lawmakers from further cutting hospital payments, according to an AHA New Now report.
Lawmakers on both sides of the political fence are considering cuts to Medicare and Medicaid programs — which could result in reduced payments to hospitals — as part of talks to raise the nation's debt limit before the nation defaults on its debts. The cuts would be in addition to the roughly $500 billion in cuts hospitals already agreed to as part of the healthcare reform law.
Yesterday, debt talks grew even more contentious as President Obama reportedly walked out of negotiations with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), according to a Bloomberg report. If no agreement is reached by the weekend, Obama may bring leaders to Camp David to work on a deal, according to the report.
