Judge Prevents NYC Public Hospitals From Cutting 150 Jobs

A Manhattan judge has prevented New York City’s public hospitals from laying off 150 electricians, carpenters and laborers, ruling that the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation failed to employ sound methodology in the cuts, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

The ruling sends the issue back to the 11-hospital agency for further review. The agency said it needed to reduce a $1.2 billion budget gap, and that tasks could be allocated to other workers.

Workers said the layoffs could jeopardize patient’s safety.

Recent state budget cuts to the city’s public hospitals will force more than 2,600 job cuts over the next two years
