5 Hospitals and Health Systems Planning Job Cuts

Here is a list of five hospitals and health systems planning to eliminate positions.

1. UMass Memorial Health Care (Worcester, Mass.) — 350 positions. UMass Memorial Health Care has announced plans to eliminate 350 jobs, or nearly 2.6 percent of its workforce, according to a Boston Globe report. The health care system said it plans to lay off 130 workers, freeze 120 vacant jobs and eliminate the equivalent of 100 jobs by reducing overtime and shifting employees from part to full time. The system employs 13,700 workers. According to the report, the reductions will affect a range of workers.

2. Cooley Dickinson Hospital (Northampton, Mass.) — 60 positions. Hospital officials say Cooley Dickinson Hospital will cut as many as 60 positions over the next few months, marking the fourth time in two years that the hospital has eliminated jobs. This reduction will bring the total loss to nearly 200 since 2008. The hospital currently has 1,770 employees. The hospital cited the desire to refinance the $50 million it owes in bonds at a better interest rate as a reason for the layoffs, according to a Republican report.

3. Beaumont Hospitals (Detroit) — 50 positions.
Beaumont Hospitals in Detroit will lay off 50 administrators and managers, part of a reorganization effort expected to save the hospital system up to $4 million a year, according to a Detroit News report. Beaumont Hospitals laid off hundreds of workers in 2008 and 2009, following a $29.5 million operating loss in 2008. At the same time, the hospital will pay its full-time workers hired before July 1 $750 in bonus checks, marking the first time the system has distributed bonuses in 20 years.

4. Community Hospital of the Monterey (Calif.) Peninsula — 43 positions. Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula plans to cut 43 positions on Thursday as part of hospital-wide cost-cutting efforts. The cuts will affect 43 nurses, nutritionists, lab workers and security personnel. The hospital has laid off 77 people since the beginning of the year, including 14 employees who took voluntary layoffs, according to a Mercury News report. Officials said the layoffs should save the hospital around $12 million.

5. St. Elizabeth Community Hospital (Red Bluff, Calif.) — 10-15 positions.
St. Elizabeth Community Hospital will reduce staffing in the hospital by about 10-15 positions to better reflect patient volume and financial capabilities, according to a Red Bluff Daily News report. The cuts represent about 3 percent of the hospital's roughly 400 employees. According to the report, no clinical or administrative positions will be affected by the reductions. The layoffs are part of a long-term strategy to cut costs in light of the economy.
