The Institute of Medicine has released a report summarizing a workshop series on trends in healthcare costs and healthcare experts' insights on methods to improve healthcare value, according to an IOM news release.
Workshop participants estimated that excess costs stemming from waste and inefficiency totaled between $750 and $785 billion in 2009. Presenters and audience members found excess costs stemmed from unnecessary and inefficient services, excessively high prices and administrative costs, missed prevention opportunities and medical fraud.
