Illinois Won't Allow Closure of Struggling Oak Forest Hospital But Approves Shut Down of East St. Louis Facility

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board has denied a plan by the Cook County Health & Hospitals System to convert its Oak Forest (Ill.) Hospital into an outpatient facility, according to a Washington Post report.

Cook County announced its plan to close Oak Forest as part of a $143 million overhaul of the public hospital system last June.

The Review Board denied the closure request due to concerns the closure would restrict access to care for the uninsured.

The Board, however, approved the closure of Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis, Ill. The hospital is expected to close in three to four months, and an urgent care facility will open nearby to help maintain healthcare access, according to the report.
