House Sets Jan. 12 for Vote to Repeal Reform Law

The new Republican-controlled House of Representatives has scheduled a vote to repeal the healthcare reform law on Jan. 12, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal Health Wire.

The repeal vote is expected to go no further than the House because Democrats control the Senate and the White House, but Republicans hope to bring enough Senate Democrats to their side to engineer a repeal there. They also plan to follow up with House legislation to choke off funding to implement the law.

To win over a few Senate Democrats, House Republicans are asking the House Democrats who originally voted against the reform law to vote for repeal. But the Hill reports that two such Democrats, Reps. Collin Peterson of Minnesota and Dan Lipinski of Illinois, said they won't join the GOP repeal effort.

On Monday, top Senate Democrats sent a letter to incoming House Speaker John Boehner warning that repeal threatens to take away a 50 percent discount on brand-name drugs for seniors who fall into a coverage gap known as the doughnut hole.
