Healthcare Employment Growth Slows; Hospital Employment Drops

The healthcare sector experienced the slowest growth rate for the year in June, while hospital employment declined by 4,000 jobs, or 0.08 percent, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics news release.

Hospitals employed 4,738,000 million people in June on a seasonally adjusted basis, down from 4,749,500 in May. However, hospital employment was up compared to a year ago. Hospitals employed 55,500 fewer people (4,682,500) in June 2010.

The overall healthcare sector added 13,500 jobs in June, which represents a slowing of the growth rate for the sector. According to a Wall Street Journal report the slowdown suggests the industry — which defied the recent economic recession by adding jobs through 2007-2009 — "is starting to come under pressure as the weak recovery coupled with state budget cuts and uncertainty about the financial effects of the healthcare overhaul are pushing hospitals and health systems to cut costs."

Martin Arrick, a managing director and analyst at Standard & Poor's, said he expects healthcare hiring to continue to slow.
