Hospital chain HCA signed a neutrality agreement with the Service Employees International Union and the California Nurses Association last April allowing the unions to organize workers at 20 HCA hospitals, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report.
The year-long agreement, which was reviewed by WSJ, allows union workers to organize workers at the specified HCA hospitals — all of which are located in n Florida, Texas, Missouri or Nevada — without objection from the operator. As part of the agreement, HCA pledged to provide the unions lists of employees and allow them on hospital property.
Since the agreement, the CNA has organized nurses at 13 HCA hospitals, and the SEIU has organized more than 4,500 HCA staff members, according to the report.
Labor experts say the agreements are growing in popularity because they allow unions to grow membership while providing some stability to the hospital operators, according to the report.
