The turnaround of 222-bed Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville, N.C., involved hewing very closely to its mission, departing CEO Kris Hoce said in a report by Blueridge Now.
"Pardee is really focused on being a community hospital," said Mr. Hoce, who has been named CEO of 687-bed Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla. "It's not trying to be anything it's not." He added: "We tried to focus on what our core purpose is. We focused on quality and outcome, and we focused on cost."
Mr. Hoce took over 222-bed Pardee Hospital in 2007, after it was beginning to recover from a $4.5 million deficit in 2005. At Mr. Hoce's arrival, the hospital had a net income was $1.2 million and he pushed that to $6.5 million in 2008 and $7.6 million in 2009.
His work at Pardee has been recognized by the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, which stated that if every hospital in America delivered heathcare as efficiently, the nation would save $300 billion.
Ken Shelton, MD, Pardee's chief of staff, praised Mr. Hoce. "He is the best CEO I have ever worked with," Dr. Shelton said. "His management style was perfect for a hospital this size."
