Vermont hospital system appoints 3 interim leaders after CEO, CFO resignations

Springfield (Vt.) Medical Care Systems, which includes nine federally qualified community health centers and Springfield Hospital, selected three interim leaders after the organization's CEO and CFO abruptly resigned in December.

Joshua R. Dufresne will serve as acting CEO of the organization. He was previously COO and health resources and services administration project director for SMCS. He has worked at SCMS for 14 years. He holds an MBA from Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H., and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

SCMS appointed Wayne A. Scholz interim CFO. He is an employee of Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health Resources, which recently signed a management agreement with SCMS. Mr. Scholz formerly served as interim revenue cycle director at Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, N.M. He has worked at Quorum for nearly 30 years. He holds an MBA from University of Texas in San Antonio, and he serves on the board of the Lone Star Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association in Dallas.

Michael J. Halstead is Springfield Hospital's new CEO. He is an employee of Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health Resources and most recently served as vice president of the company's East Division. He is a fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and he earned his MBA at University of Southern Maine School of Business in Portland.

SCMS is working to overcome financial challenges. The organization enlisted Quorum to conduct evaluations of its operations, finances and strategic direction, and help identify new leadership.

Additionally, Gov. Phil Scott appointed Tom Huebner to an advisory position at SCMS, to help the organization improve its finances, according to a Dec. 20, 2018, article in the Rutland Herald. Mr. Huebner is the former president and CEO of Rutland (Vt.) Regional Medical Center.
