UVA Medical Center names new COO: 4 things to know

University of Virginia Medical Center, based in Charlottesville, has named William "Bill" Fulkerson COO, effective Aug. 1.

Here are four things to know about Mr. Fulkerson.

1. He has more than 15 years of leadership experience at academic medical centers.

2. Currently, Mr. Fulkerson is associate operating officer for Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Hospital & Clinics. In this position, he oversees labs, radiology, inpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy, environmental services and nutrition services.

3. He also previously was administrator for oncology services at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and administrator for emergency medicine at Vanderbilt.

4. In his new position, officials said, Mr. Fulkerson will manage the UVA Medical Center's day-to-day operations, including oversight of service lines for patient care. They said he also will be a key leader of the Be Safe initiative, which aims to make UVA the safest hospital in America to receive and provide care, and oversee the construction and opening of the UVA Medical Center expansion project.
