Washington, D.C.-based United Medical Center appointed Eric Li, MD, its interim CMO.
Dr. Li is currently chairman of pathology at UMC. He joined the medical center in 2016, initially overseeing anatomical and clinical pathology services. His prior experience includes serving as an attending pathologist at Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Lancaster, N.H.-based Weeks Hospital. He completed fellowship training in hepatic and gastrointestinal pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Dr. Li succeeds Julian Craig, MD, who was fired in November after accusing the firm managing the hospital of misconduct. His employment with the hospital ended Dec. 18.
Dr. Craig accused Veritas, the consulting firm managing the hospital, of encouraging physicians to admit patients who did not need medical treatment to boost revenue, improperly cutting his hours and ignoring programs focused on patient safety. The D.C. Council voted not to extend the management contract with Veritas, in part due to Dr. Craig's testimony, The Washington Post reported.
