David S. Guzick, MD, PhD, senior vice president for health affairs and president of Gainesville-based University of Florida Health, is stepping down July 1, according to The Gainesville Sun.
Dr. Guzick wrote in a letter to his colleagues that his "experience as a cancer patient in the summer and fall of 2017 was transformative in terms of how I think about the remainder of my career and life," according to the report. His cancer experience caused him to re-evaluate his goals moving forward. "What comes next? Do I continue what I’m doing, or do I explore other paths?" he wrote in the letter.
Dr. Guzick assumed his current roles in 2009. During his tenure, UF Health opened two hospitals at the Shands complex in Gainesville as well as other new clinics and facilities.
Prior to joining UF Health, Dr. Guzick was dean of the school of medicine and dentistry at University of Rochester (N.Y.). A reproductive endocrinology specialist, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2008.
