The health systems adding dual executive roles

Hospital and health system executives continue to take second, dual positions within enterprises. These roles vary based on the organization's size and the individual's skill set, and there have been several announced in recent months.

A number of potential reasons exist behind dual roles, including improving efficiency and leveraging skills of current employees in new ways.

Here are the dual roles reported on by Becker's this year:

  • Jodi Stack, RN, MSN, was appointed chief nursing officer and chief administrative officer of Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass.
  • Antoine Poythress shared plans to exit his role as CEO of Millen, Ga.-based Jenkins County Medical Center to become COO and CFO of Effingham Health System in Springfield, Ga.
  • Colleen Blye took the role of executive vice president, CFO, and chief business officer at New York City-based Montefiore Health System. 
  • Methodist Hospital Atascosa in San Antonio appointed Jacalyn DeHarte, BSN, its COO and chief nursing officer. 
  • Christopher Gilligan, MD, was named senior vice president, chief medical officer and chief quality officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J.
  • Anthony Saul, CFO of Atlanta-based Grady Health System, added on the duties and title of COO.
  • Carlos Vasquez was named vice president and COO of at Franciscan Health Crawfordsville (Ind.), in addition to his role at Franciscan Health Rensselaer (Ind.).
  • Northwest Health in Valparaiso, Ind., named Simon Ratliff CEO of two Indiana hospitals: one in La Porte and one in Starke. 
  • Sara Brokaw, MSN, RN, was selected as the next president of Bellevue (Ohio) Hospital, in addition to her current role as chief nursing officer. 
  • Crystal Farmer, MSN, RN, was selected to serve as both COO and chief nursing officer of Fishersville, Va.-based Augusta Health.
  • University Medical Center New Orleans, part of LCMC Health, also based in New Orleans, appointed John Nickens IV CEO. Mr. Nickens will serve in this role while continuing as president of the LCMC Health hospital services, according to a Feb. 1 hospital news release shared with Becker's
  • University Medical Center New Orleans also announced Allison Guste, BSN, RN, as chief nursing officer. Ms. Guste will serve in this role and also as the LCMC Health vice president of nursing and clinical services.
  • C.J. Marbley, COO and chief nursing officer of LCMC Health's New Orleans East Hospital, will continue in this role while serving as UMC vice president of nursing services.
  • St. Luke's Jerome (Idaho) Medical Center appointed Kevin Watson, MSN, FNP, to the dual role of chief operating and chief nursing officer. Mr. Watson had been serving in the CNO role before taking on the new dual title, the Boise, Idaho-based health system said in a Jan. 22 post on LinkedIn. 
  • Brian Helleland was named chief executive of Providence St. Joseph Hospital Orange (Calif.) and chief executive for the Orange County/High Desert service area, part of Renton, Wash.-based Providence's recently reorganized California South division. Mr. Helleland began the dual role Nov. 28 after serving as interim chief executive of St. Joseph since September, according to a news release shared with Becker's.
